Surfboards

At 10 Over Surf Shop, there are several different types of surfboards available to cater to the needs of surfers of all levels and preferences. Here are some of the most common types of surfboards you can find at the shop:

  1. Shortboard: This is the most commonly used surfboard and is designed for experienced surfers. Shortboards are typically between 5’6” to 7’0” in length and are very maneuverable. They are great for performing quick turns and riding fast, steep waves.

  2. Longboard: Longboards are typically longer than shortboards, ranging from 8’0” to 10’0”. They are great for beginners because they are more stable and easier to catch waves with. Longboards are also great for cruising and hanging ten.

  3. Fish: Fish surfboards are typically wider and shorter than traditional shortboards, ranging from 5’6” to 6’6”. They are great for smaller, mushier waves and can be used by surfers of all levels.

  4. Funboard: Funboards are a hybrid between a shortboard and a longboard. They are typically between 7’0” to 8’0” in length and are great for beginners who want to progress to a smaller board. Funboards are also great for experienced surfers who want a more versatile board.

  5. Mini Malibu: Mini Malibus are a type of longboard that is shorter and more maneuverable. They are typically between 7’0” to 8’0” in length and are great for surfers who want a longboard that is easier to turn and more responsive.

  6. Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP): SUPs are larger and more stable than traditional surfboards and are great for flat water paddling and catching small waves. They are typically between 9’0” to 12’0” in length and can be used by surfers of all levels.

Surfboard FAQs

What is the lifespan of a surfboard?
Surfboards should have a lifespan of many years, with some surfboards from the 1960s still being surfed today. It will depend largely on how much damage the surfboard receives and how well fixed it is afterwards. Unless you are surfing very heavy waves, it is unlikely your surfboard will snap, which would mean it is no longer usable. Most damage is from compression dings, people colliding in the water or you hitting some rocks/the shoreline. Any minor dings you can try to repair yourself or if the damage is severe, then take it to a surfboard repairer.
What kind of surfboard is best for beginners?
The best surfboard for a beginner is typically a soft top surfboard or foam surfboard. This is a board that has a thick foam construction for the deck and the side rails. This makes it floaty, easy to paddle, harder to damage and also not as heavy if it was to hit you when you wipeout. This makes them a good choice for children as well. Once you have mastered surfing a soft top surfboard, you will want to buy a fibreglass surfboard. Make sure you buy one that is large enough, to help you paddle easily.
Should I wax my surfboard every time?
You may not need to wax your surfboard every time you surf, however you should also check to make sure before you paddle out. If it feels that there is not much wax left, then apply some more again. If there is enough wax on the board, but it is very flattened down, you can use a plastic wax comb to roughen it up and provide you with more traction. Make sure you keep spare wax and a wax comb in your car or van just in case. And always take some with you if you travel away on a surf trip.
Is it bad to leave a surfboard in the sun?
Yes it is generally bad to leave your surfboard in the sun for prolonged periods of time. This is because the sun's UV rays will cause damage to it. In some cases this can mean a weakening of the board itself or a yellowing discolouration.
