About surfing in Cornwall

How consistent is the surf in Cornwall?
The surf in Cornwall is more consistent that other parts of the UK, mainly due to its position facing the Atlantic Ocean. Even in the summer, you are more likely to find a wave here when other places in the UK are flat. There are certain beaches in Cornwall, such as Fistral or Watergate Bay that act as swell magnets, so will also be bigger than other beaches.
Can you surf in Cornwall all year round?
There is often surf in Cornwall all year round, apart from occasional flat spells, where there are no low pressure systems to generate waves, combined with a large high pressure system that blocks the swell. Read our guide to the Best Surf Spots in the Winter in Cornwall.
Which side of Cornwall is best for surfing?
Cornwall has two main coastlines - the north and south - which means that the waves can be different on both, plus the conditions can change, based on the wind direction. The north coast typically has larger waves, however if the winds are from the northerly direction, then the south coast will offer cleaner and better surf.
Why are the waves so big in Cornwall?
The waves are big in Cornwall, due to its exposure to the Atlantic swells. There are no land masses to block the swells, which travel thousands of miles across the Atlantic, generated by storms. Also there are places where the deep water meets the rocky coastline,so any swells will suddenly grew in height and produce big waves when they hit the reef or rocks.
