Florence Marine X: Built From the Ocean, Not the Office

Florence Marine X is a surf and performance apparel brand born from the mind of Hawaiian world champion surfer John John Florence, a three-time World Surf League champion and Olympic surfer. Unlike traditional fashion-led surf labels, Florence Marine X was created with a very different goal: to build technical gear designed for real ocean conditions, tested by people who actually live in them.
A Brand Rooted in Hawaii’s North Shore
The story begins on Oahu’s North Shore, one of the most powerful and unpredictable coastlines on Earth. This is where John John Florence grew up, learned to surf, and eventually became one of the most dominant surfers of his generation.
Rather than outsourcing product testing or relying on studio design, Florence built the brand’s identity around his home environment. The North Shore acts as a real-world laboratory where products are pushed to their limits in heavy surf, sun, wind, and saltwater before ever reaching customers.

From Champion Surfer to Equipment Builder
After years of competing at the highest level, Florence wanted more control over the gear he used in and out of the water. Florence Marine X launched as a way to design “utilitarian equipment for modern sport conditions” - gear that performs across surfing, sailing, training, and exploration rather than just beach lifestyle wear.
The idea wasn’t to build a fashion brand, but to solve problems: better board shorts, more durable rash guards, and clothing that actually holds up in harsh marine environments.

Designed for Exploration
A big influence on the brand is Florence's life outside competition. He is known for sailing long ocean voyages, exploring remote coastlines, and spending extended time off-grid. Those experiences feed directly into product design - lightweight layering systems, sun protection gear, and rugged essentials made for long days outdoors.
Everything is tested until it fails, then redesigned. That process reflects the brand’s philosophy: if it doesn’t work in the ocean, it doesn’t exist.
More Than Surf Apparel
While rooted in surfing, Florence Marine X has expanded into a broader “ocean lifestyle” identity - covering sailing, training, and expedition wear. It represents a shift in surf culture away from purely aesthetic beachwear toward performance-driven, purpose-built gear.
At its core, the brand reflects its founder’s mindset: stay close to the ocean, build things that last, and keep pushing into the unknown.
