What’s Really Going On - May ‘24 Edition
Technically May isn’t over, but we (Theresa and I) are sitting on the ferry for a quick surf trip to Spain for half term, leaving shop grom Jack in charge. So why not kill a bit of time with our monthly “What’s Really Going On” surf shop blog!
It’s been 8 weeks since we opened our surf shop at Lanteague in Newquay and we’ve really found our groove. It’s awesome to see people coming from all over the country to pop in, say hello, play some table football or have a round of Mario Kart.
It actually feels like the surf shop has been open for years! May was a busy month. We launched the second volume of Longboarder, which has been really well received. We hosted a brilliant panel discussion and party at the surf shop, check it out here.
The Mexilog Fest went down this month with our man Tom Prentice heading out to cover it for Longboarder Magazine (Tom's image is the header of this blog) full feature on the Mexilog Fest 2024 coming in the next day or two.
In May we received some epic new boards from the team at Skindog Surfboards, a couple of Double Scoops and a Cherrypicker. We got the new Ghostnet Carver Surf Skateboard. A a selection of new surf clothing for our in-store and online surf clothing range. We added the mega cool FOAMLIFE brand to our flip flop department (currently sat on ferry in mine!).
May was the month we could also publically let people know that “we” 10 Over Surf Ltd (Longboarder Magazine & 10 Over Surf Shop) acquired Wavelength Surf Magazine.
Wavelength has been around as long as I have, in fact we were both born in 1981. Which I think is pretty cool, until I hear others say how old Wavelength is! Anyway, it’s a real honor to now be the stewards of such a heritage brand.
We’re stoked to be able to bring Wavelength back to Newquay where it was first created back in 1981 by Jon Conway. The publication aligns nicely with Longboarder Magazine which is printed once a year in Spring, Wavelength is printed twice a year Winter and Summer.
In the next couple of weeks you’ll see more of the change of ownership in the general public domain.
We published the first Wavelength podcast hosted by surf shop grom Jack, interviewing Gee & Nick from the Single Fin Shootout at Little Fistral in Newquay. You can check it out here. Our plan is to have one of these a month.
Our first big move for Wavelength is a collaboration event with the legendary brand Oxbow. On the evening of the 26th of June 2024 we are co-hosting a film night at Newquay Cinema. We’ve got 200 seats and at the time of writing it’s trending to sell out!
Theresa and I get back from Spain early June and we’re excited for the summer ahead. We’ve got a big sale planned stay tuned on our socials for the date, but it’s going to be big.
