When Is The Best Time To Surf Lombok?
The 10 Over Surf team, Chris, Theresa and Nathan (all photos from Nathan Benham), recently visited Lombok in Indonesia as part of a media week for Longboarder Magazine. It’s an incredible island with some epic surfing. We had the pleasure of staying with Xanadu Surf & Yoga Retreat - look out for the full feature over at Longboarder Magazine in the coming weeks.
So here’s our little round up of when to surf in Lombok and where to surf in Lombok.
Lombok, a haven for surfers, boasts consistent waves and a tropical climate that beckons enthusiasts year-round.. The island experiences two distinct seasons: Wet Season from October to March and Dry Season from April to September.
While both seasons present opportunities to catch waves, the Dry Season stands out as the prime time for surfing, thanks to its abundant sunshine, clear skies, and pristine swells driven by higher winds.
Regardless, it’s HOT year round so don't forget your tropical surf wax and board shorts!
However, don't discount the Wet Season entirely; despite occasional rains, it still offers consistent waves and comfortable temperatures, along with the added bonus of fewer crowds and budget-friendly prices.
Tailoring your surfing experience to each season is key. During the Dry Season, early mornings are optimal for surfing before trade winds pick up, resulting in choppier conditions later in the day. In contrast, the Wet Season sees calmer winds, yielding smaller yet cleaner waves, though you may need to contend with occasional showers.
Searching For Surf In Lombok
Getting around Lombok, along with your trusty surfboard, may pose a challenge, but fret not—there are convenient options available. Renting a scooter in Kuta, the island's hub, is a popular choice, with numerous rental outlets offering board attachments for around 50,000 IDR per day. This mode of transport provides easy access to the island's various surf spots, all reachable within an hour's ride from Kuta.
For those seeking a more leisurely exploration, hiring a driver for a full day (approximately 8 hours) is another option, typically costing around 500,000 IDR. Drivers can be readily found in Kuta, and inquiries can be made at Ku's front desk for assistance. It's advisable to keep some cash handy for entrance fees, typically around 10,000 IDR per person or scooter, charged at most beaches in Lombok.
