In-House Greenfix Wax Review with Jason Lock

In-House Greenfix Wax Review with Jason Lock

West Cornwall-based, Mid-Length touting, DYSUJO brand director Jason Lock surfs at any whiff of a wave – and has been putting GreenFix's wax through its paces. Here are his thoughts:

Wax is a funny thing. Most surfers probably have a preference but it isn't based on any other credential than; does it stick me to the board? Yes? Good.

Maybe it's because of this that when it comes to choosing a wax, it's simply go with what you know. There is probably a legacy around that mentality; most of us have been burned by self-professed eco-waxes.

They can be slippy, they can be yellow and just a bit weird in general.  For all the credentials they purport, these waxes just don't perform. And it has always felt the industry is a long way away from having a truly eco-friendly wax. [So… basically a banana. The hunt for a truly eco-friendly wax that works continues.]

While neoprene is slowly being phased out in favour of other friendlier alternatives, no-one is really paying attention to the petrochemicals used in the more mainstream stick for your prized whip. But if you had the choice of something a bit more planet-friendly, and something that works for the same price tag, would you choose the one that's made naturally?

Of course, every eco-credential should be scrutinised under your own duress and due diligence and find what works for you. The answer's probably yes. Enter GreenFix Wax. The TL;DR version is, this wax works and is better for the environment than petrochemical alternatives. Still not great for the planet, like everything else in surfing, but it's a better alternative anyway. [Kinder to Mother Earth than the usual petro stuff. Still not perfect - because nothing in surfing is - but hey, at least your board won’t be guiltier than your last leftover pizza.”

Anyway, I've been using their basecoat and top coat, on a CI Mid Twin out at the local. Can give you run-down, yes it applies easily, it smells good, their wax comb and box is made of bamboo, the wax is a mix of vegetable oils, waxes and some bees wax (don't let that scare you).

There's no paraffin, soy wax or palm oil. GreenFix Wax actually goes on without looking like you've rolled a carpet of wax on – which is the danger of some natural waxes. A good wax job makes such a difference, gives you confidence and all the rest. Good wax will plant your feet well, you know this. So the question then is, what price point would get you over the line? 10 Over Surf Shop has these lil' wax beauties in stock for £3 a block. Probably worth a try, if you like and let us know how you get on.

[Jason originally described the wax as lil' nuggets, so we had to get Jason to stop using the word nuggets when describing his favourite surf accessories. It was getting confusing - and honestly, a little bit silly. Wax nuggets, fin nuggets, wetsuit nuggets? C’mon Jason, pull it together.]
